How Rebura took Amit from Student Engineer to Data Engineer

Insights Team Highlights

At Rebura, we believe in growing talent from the ground up - and our recent collaboration with Eden Smith through their Nurture Programme is a great example of that in action.

The Nurture Programme connects MSc AI, Data Science, and IoT students with businesses for 12-week industry projects that also inform their dissertations. It’s a win–win: students get real-world experience, and businesses gain fresh thinking, diverse skills, and motivated, business-ready talent.

A Brilliant Start

In January 2025, we welcomed Amit Kumar Biswas to the Rebura Data team as part of his MSc dissertation with the University of Salford. Over the next three months, Amit took on a technically complex and high-impact challenge: building an internal data portal for Rebura and one of our clients.

“Working at Rebura has enabled me to experience my academic knowledge in a real-world scenario.”
– Amit Kumar Biswas, Data Engineer at Rebura

The Project

On paper, the goal was simple: create a single place for client-specific data. In reality, it meant bringing together multiple moving parts and making them work seamlessly.

Here’s what the portal did:

  • Pulled data from sources including Jira, Confluence, and AWS monitoring tools
  • Processed and consolidated that data for efficient delivery
  • Displayed it all through easy-to-use tables and interactive graphs

The tech stack was extensive -  with AWS at its core. Amit worked with AWS Chalice, Lambda, API Gateway, Secrets Manager, Cognito, Amplify, and React to bring the solution to life.

Why It Worked

Amit puts his positive experience down to two things:

The team – From day one, the Rebura Data team was there to guide and support him, answering questions and sharing knowledge without ever making him feel out of place.

The task – The work drew on his existing skills as a software engineer but also pushed him to learn new tools and concepts. That mix kept the challenge engaging and the learning curve steep, but manageable.

The Journey

The 12 weeks were packed with growth that allowed Amit to strengthen his technical and personal skills.

Technical skills

  • Built and deployed a complete solution in AWS
  • Got hands-on with Chalice, Lambda, Cognito, and Amplify
  • Developed practical expertise in API design, cloud deployment, and data integration

Personal development

  • Strengthened collaboration and communication skills
  • Learned to explain complex technical ideas to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Built confidence in managing deadlines and client expectations
  • Took feedback on board and applied it quickly

A True Collaboration

For us, bringing in early-career professionals is about more than giving someone a foot in the door. It’s about the fresh ideas, curiosity, and creativity they bring - and the value they can deliver when given the right support.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Rebura for their mentorship, support, and belief in the next generation of data professionals. It’s been a privilege to collaborate with you.”
– Marie May, Head of Education at Eden Smith.

Investing in the Next Generation

Amit’s project wasn’t just a dissertation - it was the start of his career. He brought energy, problem-solving skills, and a genuine passion for learning. We gave him the opportunity to apply his knowledge in a real-world setting and stretch beyond it.

Fast forward to today: Amit is now a full-time Data Engineer at Rebura - a fantastic outcome that shows what happens when you combine talent, opportunity, and the right environment.

“From day one with the initial interviews with Amit it was clear he is a self-starter, and that was proven all the way through the project. His can-do attitude worked really well.  He also navigated carefully the line between complexity and simplicity, and ensuring that anything that seemed sub optimal was discussed and reviewed first.  Asking him to join the team at the end of the project was a no-brainer." – Dan Keely, Principal Data Enginner at Rebura

We’re proud of what he’s achieved, and we look forward to welcoming more students through the Nurture Programme. If you’re thinking about getting involved, we’d say go for it. It’s more than work experience -  it’s helping shape the future of the tech industry.
