The Challenge

As a growing startup, keeping a close eye on finances was vital for Arwen. They needed to make their cloud spending predictable and stable to maintain their runway while building towards profitability. While they had some visibility of their costs, they knew there were opportunities to optimise that they hadn't yet uncovered.

The Solution

Our team implemented a proactive FinOps review to address Arwen AI’s cloud challenges. Through a technical deep dive with Arwen, we identified key areas for improvement, including their database setup and Fargate workloads.

Database optimisation

Using our hands-on knowledge of AWS and cloud economics, we reviewed Arwen’s Aurora Serverless workloads, which were costing them $4-5k per month. After investigation, we spotted a steady usage pattern that meant Serverless was no longer the right fit. By mapping resource usage to more cost-effective on-demand RDS instances and purchasing reservations, we achieved an average monthly saving of $1,676. We also worked with Arwen to optimise database queries, improving performance and predictability.

Fargate workloads

It’s easy to miss the little things – like a misbehaving task that never shuts down. Our expert team uncovered a malfunctioning scheduled ECS task quietly spinning up to 80 unnecessary concurrent jobs. We fixed the root cause, right-sized processes, and restored efficiency – saving hundreds each month that would have slipped away unnoticed.

We worked closely with ArwenAI every step of the way. By sharing our knowledge and expertise, we left Arwen’s team feeling more confident, skilled, and empowered to manage and optimise their own AWS environment.
